Michael Evans (1957 ~ 2021) was a drummer, percussionist and player of assorted and sundry other instruments including the theremin, saxophone, etc). He was a brilliant improvisor. And he was, simply, a wonderful human being: funny, ever curious about the world and the people and things in it. I was sad to have him leave us, suddenly and unexpectedly, in August of 2021. He was truly beloved my many, many people around the world. This is a song I wrote about him, doing my best, in just three verses, to express some of what made him such a fine musician and such a top guy.

so long, so long, Michael Evans
we’re so sad to see you go
you've left behind so many who loved you
Michael Evans we loved you so

never heard a bad word said about you
and your kindness was acknowledged far and wide
when I heard the news this morning that you’d left us
it left an empty feeling deep inside

yes it did

you had a way with the stick and the drum
you brought the rhythms in that way
that only you could do
you sure brought that joyful noise, and a rattling of bells
every sound and every note, it rang so true

you’d coax such wonderful sounds
from whatever you had on hand
might've been the barrel of a washing machine
or some old broken toy
a daring adventurer in the world of crazy sound
your fearlessness and playfulness
brought us so much joy

so long, so long, Michael Evans
those of us who knew you were lucky indeed
and for all of those who delighted in your joyful antics onstage
Michael Evans, you made happiness grow like a weed

i know that you’ll live on in the hearts of so many
and we’ll remember what you were known to say
those words should always serve as a simple reminder
“have a little fun every day”
