lyrics

American Dream

last night i dreamed
of a hundred million McMansions
all across America burning down
the smoke rose up to the sky
it was carried on the wind
all the way down to the Mexican border
where it choked the guards at the prison camps
or at least brought tears to their eyes

in my American dream, in my American dream

i bought some over-the-counter, lemony fresh
anti-depressants
some jelly beans, and a book on
how to make pancake batter
the girl at the checkout smiled like a TV star
and said “that’s fake news!”
as she gave me my change
she said “listen up snowflake, ALL lives matter!”

in my American dream, in my American dream

then i realized
everyone was carrying at least one gun
they were all filing into a Waffle House on Route 44
on every other corner they were beating up someone
for wearing a mask
as a cop with his knee on a Black man’s neck
married the girl next door

in my American dream, in my American dream

then one by one all the people stepped into a voting booth
where they each fell through a trap door
and landed in a Russian disco
some random guy laid a wreath
at the Tomb of the Unknown Affordable Apartment
and wandered off singing
I Left My Heart In San Francisco

in my American dream, in my American dream

a girl in a FOX News t-shirt and six inch heels
was goosestepping down the avenue
a defense contractor in a hot pink Humvee
pulled up beside her
said "won't you join me for molotov cocktails?
i know a nice little Iranian restaurant"
but then that new death ray he was tinkering with
unfortunately fried her

in my American dream, in my American dream

when i woke up, y'all, it was morning
morning in America
stepped out to get the paper, saw my nextdoor neighbor
lieutenant William F. Calley
he said "you really oughtta try this napalm
it's the only way to care for your grass"
then he hopped into a long black hearse
and drove off with Mustang Sally

in my American dream, in my American dream
